Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, has roots dating back to the 15th century. Ikebana instructor Zaima blends tradition with modern design in this inspiring guide. After an overview of mass, line, and color, the three main elements of ikebana, and basic supplies and techniques, the book introduces readers to the various styles of ikebana. The author begins with an overview of the moribana (piled-up flowers) style, which provides beginners with foundational skills via a collection of tutorials that explore methods for stabilizing, bending, and arranging flowers, stems, and branches. These basic tutorials are followed by explorations of other styles, ranging from striking minimalist arrangements to designs that combine a variety of colors and elements in a harmonious manner. Negative space is a key element of ikebana, and Zaima offers multiple views of several arrangements to illustrate this principle, showing how they appear from the front and from above. Throughout the book, the author encourages readers to use the natural materials available to them to create their own stunning designs. VERDICT This beautifully illustrated guide serves as a thorough introduction to ikebana. Crafters who enjoy working with natural materials will likely be inspired by Zaima's artistry.--Nanette Donohue
