A plus-sized private investigator must clear her friend and ex-partner of murdering his ex-wife in this cozy mystery by the author of Cooked Goose.

When Savannah Reid's only shot at romance for Valentine's Day includes a stakeout with her ex-partner, Dirk Coulter, things aren't exactly looking up in the hearts-and-flowers department. After pulling an all-nighter, Savannah wants nothing more than to cook up a plate of steamy grits and hash browns. But no sooner has she buttered the skillet when disaster arrives in the overdone, underdressed form of Polly Coulter, Dirk's ex-wife.

Days later, the no-good, two-timing broad is found lying in a pool of blood in Dirk's doublewide trailer, shot through the chest with his service revolver. When Dirk is arrested for Polly's murder, Savannah goes to work to clear his name, and every lead points to trouble. All in all, this is one Valentine's Day that's shaping up to be a real massacre . . .

Savannah Reid, erstwhile police officer and current PI, has deep Georgia roots and close ties to the family of friends she's built in Southern California, especially Dirk, her former partner and buddy. When Dirk's ex-wife is found in his trailer, shot with Dirk's gun, it looks very bad indeed. But never you mind: Savannah, armed with a passion for food and oozing steel-magnolia charm, sees what needs to be done. The plot encompasses skinheads, a Renaissance fair, stupid e-mail tricks, and abusive boyfriends; there are also amusing bits involving zaftig Savannah's skinny assistant, Tammy, and the sartorially perfect and perfectly charming gay couple, Ryan and John. This is a tale of revenge, finally: Savannah gets to stick it to the guy who fired her, to her deadbeat dad, to a clueless neo-Nazi teen, and even, in a way, to Dirk's ex-wife. Romping good fun, and don't forget the chocolates. ((Reviewed November 1, 1999))(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 1999, American Library Association.)
