The search for a movie star's missing family puts California's plus-sized P.I. on the case of a killer's plot in this mystery by the author of Every Body.
In San Carmelita, California, private detective Savannah Reid and her husband are facing their latest challenge: babysitting their newlywed friends' incredibly fussy infant daughter. But soothing a squalling baby is kid's stuff compared to the Midnight Magnolia Detective Agency's latest case. Charismatic actor Ethan Malloy has enlisted the help of Savannah and Co. in a desperate attempt to track down his missing wife and toddler—just before the beloved family nanny gets murdered.
With the police involved and paparazzi swarming at every turn, the discreet search becomes a sensationalized homicide investigation. And some snooping into the complicated private lives of Ethan and his wife tells Savannah that she's in for a deadly chase. As Savannah dismantles bombshell after bombshell while balancing delicate family matters of her own, she soon finds herself closing in on a terrifying culprit—one who's willing to do anything for a moment in the spotlight.

Emotions run high as private detective Savannah Reid (Every Body on Deck, 2017, etc.) rushes to find the missing wife and child of a distraught movie star.To millions of adoring fans, Hollywood heartthrob Ethan Malloy is the dreamiest, sexiest, most desirable man alive. But to Savannah, he's just a loyal husband and loving dad whose world hasn't been the same since his wife and baby son, Freddy, disappeared without a trace. Savannah's developed a soft spot for kiddies ever since her brother, Waycross, teamed up with her assistant, Tammy Reid (nee Hart), to produce Vanna Rose Reid, a red-haired bundle of joy. She desperately wants to find Ethan's missing family despite a shortage of clues or suspects. She does know that someone sent the actor a photo of his wife, Elizabeth "Beth" Sarsone, canoodling with Neil Irwin, her shady ex. And Savannah suspects that Elizabeth may have received a similar shot, since, before running off, she accused Ethan of getting back with former fiancee Candace York. But who sent the photos and why remain mysteries. The stakes go up sharply, however, when Freddy's nanny, Pilar Padilla, is found dead in a nearby canyon. Now Savannah knows she's stalking someone who won't hesitate to use lethal force, someone who must be stopped before killing again.McKevett adds a shot of urgency to her mild, affable series. But the dark side of this case doesn't eclipse her heroine's sunny generosity and shrewd common sense.

In McKevett’s enjoyable 23rd Savannah Reid mystery (after 2017’s Every Body on Deck), Savannah, the proprietor of the Midnight Magnolia Detective Agency, answers a distress call from actor Ethan Malloy, one of Hollywood’s hottest hunks. Ethan tells Savannah that his wife, Beth, stormed out of their Malibu house after the couple had an argument the day before, accompanied by their toddler son and the boy’s nanny, Pilar Padilla. Ethan admits Beth has temporarily left him before in such circumstances, but she always kept in touch. That he hasn’t heard from her in more than 24 hours has him worried. When Pilar is found brutally murdered, Savannah’s hubby, San Carmelita, Calif., Det. Sgt. Dirk Coulter, joins the case. In addition to Ethan, the large suspect pool includes Ethan’s agent, who has secretly signed Beth as a client, and has more than a business interest in her to boot. Meanwhile, Savannah must cope with fraught family matters related to sister-in-law Tammy. As this inventive entry demonstrates, McKevett knows how to keep a long-running cozy series fresh. Agent: Richard Curtis, Richard Curtis Associates.
