      Fans of Carolyn Haines and Charlaine Harris will delight in this debut mystery from Delgado (The Heartbreak Pill). Mariela Estevez-Valdez—one part Helen Gurley Brown and one part Sookie Stackhouse—thinks marriage is for the birds, and wants to have affairs only with married men. When her ex-lover Hector Ferro winds up dead on a sidewalk in Miami’s Little Havana, Mariela falls under suspicion and has to get to the bottom of his death to clear her name. Mariela decides to rely on her clairvoyance, which she hasn’t used in years, to solve the case, adding a fresh twist to an overly familiar plot device. With the chatty prose of chick lit, a sassy girlfriend narrator, and a self-help cheerleading attitude (“The secret to talking to the dead is... your belief that you can do it”), it doesn’t take a psychic to predict that this fun novel will be a hit.       Mariela Estevez is tired of dating married men and hiding her gift of clairvoyancy. Then her life is turned upside down when Hector, her most recent love interest, is murdered in Miami's Little Havana. She decides to relearn everything she thought she remembered about her mystical gift, only to find out she remembered it all wrong. Enter an old flame who very much wants to rekindle their romance and Mariela's race to solve the murder before she becomes the prime suspect and you will be swept into Mariela's life. Though rather verbose at times, the story is well written and will draw in fans of Latin American fiction. The heroine's struggles are relatable and will prod readers to reevaluate what to look for in love and life. VERDICT Delgado's second foray into the fiction world (after 2008's The Heartbreak Pill) provides intricate detail and introspection. Readers of Latino literature and those who like a strong mystery will appreciate this journey down the road to Calle Ocho and into a vibrant, interlinked Cuban community.--Jane Blue, Andrews P.L., NC
