Curious about her enduring love for Richard Brautigan's work, Allison Green embarks on a roadtrip tracing the route of his most famous work, Trout Fishing in America. As she travels, she examines the way we relate to the things that influence us—the ancestors who created us, the past that shaped us, the writers who changed the way we saw the world—and how these things intertwine to make us who we are. The Ghosts Who Travel With Me speaks to a forgotten generation while breaking the confines of traditional memoir.

Green's memoir recounts her road trip to Idaho with girlfriend Arline in which she pays homage to American author Richard Brautigan (1935-84) and his 1967 novella Trout Fishing in America. Her brief chapters mimic the layout of Trout Fishing and relate the details of her youth, her relationship with Arline, and the circumstances under which she read and connected to Brautigan and his book. Likening her journey to a spiritual endeavor, Green notes that she invests her paperback copy of Brautigan's work "with a meaning that is beyond material reality. It is the wafer of my communion." Although the author never met Brautigan, she attends the opening of the Brautigan Library in Vancouver, WA, and meets his daughter, Ianthe. The picture Green takes with a life-size cutout of Brautigan at the library event brings her journey full circle. VERDICT Green's memoir will appeal to a diverse readership, from Brautigan fans to travel enthusiasts to those interested in LGBTQ and feminist issues.--Lacy S. Wolfe, Ouachita Baptist Univ.
